The Process Of Getting Dentures

The Process Of Getting Dentures

Many people still think of dentures as something of an old-fashioned treatment of last resort, reserved exclusively for older people denturessuffering from tooth loss. But technological advancements and upgrades have made dentures more comfortable and natural looking than ever, and there is a range of options designed for all types and degrees of tooth loss, making them one of the most durable and reliable solutions for replacing missing teeth.

The most common cause of tooth loss is periodontal (gum) disease. While it is more common among older men and women and generally considered a disease of aging, everyone is susceptible to gum disease and tooth loss. More and more patients in their 30s and 40s are being diagnosed with gum disease, putting them at risk for losing teeth well before retirement age. Dr. Steve Yi of El Paso Viva Dental offers several types of dentures for every situation.

The first step is to schedule a comprehensive dental exam, where Dr. Yi will evaluate the health of the gums and teeth. Dentures are designed to fit securely over the gums, so a mold of the gums and upper and lower palette is taken in order to get a custom fit. Prosthetic teeth are then designed to closely match the color and texture of natural teeth.

Immediate dentures are a temporary option that patients can wear while their gums heal from extractions or until their custom dentures are ready.

Types of Dentures

Conventional full dentures - conform to the gums and ridge bone to closely match the fit and feel of natural teeth

Implant-supported overdentures - attach to a few dental implants for a more secure and permanent fit

Transitional partial dentures - temporary and affordable option for gums healing from oral surgery or until the permanent pair is completed

Removable partial dentures - metal based alternative to plastic dentures
